4. 5 inch Black Buffalo Horn Gold Streaks Scales Handle Set Pair Handles Material for Knife Making Blanks Blades Knives Custom

Feature

Please read the product description below for tips on how to work with this buffalo horn.
Approximate Length: 5 inches, Approximate Width: 1.5 inches, Approximate Thickness: 3/8 inch
Use regular woodworking tools to cut and shape this material. Try to leave as much of the surface area untouched as possible to retain as much of the colored dye as possible. Due to the density of buffalo horn, the dye is only able to penetrate about 1mm deep into the material. Also please note that any cut or sanded portions will temporarily appear gray-- just polish and buff these areas to return them to a beautiful, deep, glossy sheen.
Every set of scales WILL differ in pattern, texture, color and shape. Each is cut from naturally occurring horn/bone.
Create your own beautiful knife handles for your own custom knives! We also sell beautiful mosaic pins to attach your handles with! Check out our other items.

Description

This is a beautiful pair of handle making scales for making a knife.

This is a set of naturally occurring buffalo horn. They will, at random, have yellow/gold streaks going through them which gives an exceptionally handsome look. Please see the second photo for examples of the various scales to get an idea of the variety of patterns. Selected at our choice and at random. They look very impressive and will make a gorgeous handle for your knife. We have these custom made for our store and you wont find these anywhere else.

You get 2 scales with each set.

Dimensions:
Length: 5 inches approximately
Width: 1.5 inches approximately
Height: 3/8 inch approximately (Thickness can vary)

Note: This item is made with naturally occurring animal material. Each piece will be unique and may vary in dimensions, color, thickness or texture.

Tips for working with this buffalo horn:
  • Use regular woodworking tools to cut and shape this material.
  • When shaping your handle, try to leave as much of the surface area untouched as possible to retain as much of the colored areas as possible. Due to the density of buffalo horn, the dye is only able to penetrate about 1mm deep into the material.
  • Please note that any cut or sanded portions will turn a dull gray color. Just polish and buff these areas to return them to a beautiful, deep, glossy sheen.
  • If thinning the scales is required, it is recommended that you sand the back-side of the scales (facing your blade's handle), to leave as much of the outside of the buffalo horn as untouched as possible.
  • Sometimes the pieces may require sanding to become perfectly flat. A standard belt sander works well for this job.
  • The final step of buffing and polishing buffalo horn is a must, as it will darken and become glossy with a brilliant sheen.

Each item is selected for its unique inlay pattern, and is one of a kind. The four blocks shown in the image have had one side lightly buffed to illustrate the diversity of appearance among different blocks. Product sold is one single block, without this buffing.
